Reporting a crime online: you can do this via so-called online police stations. A brief step-by-step guide.

Criminal complaint - “Onlinewache”

In most Länder, the police offer the possibility to file criminal complaints online. In some Länder the respective websites are called “Internetwache”, and in other Länder they are called “Onlinewache”. But what kind of criminal complaints can you file online? And how can you do this?

Please be aware:

Online police stations are not a suitable point of contact if, for example

  • evidence must be secured or the circumstances at the scene of the crime must be recorded,
  • the facts of the case are very extensive or complicated

Especially if you are feeling very upset, it can help to ask a close friend or relative to assist you when filing the criminal complaint. Since questions about the crime can be stressful for those affected, it is a good idea to have someone to support you.

Reports of internet crime can also be relayed to the police and public prosecutor’s office via reporting centres. These centres also offer help with filing criminal complaints and requests to prosecute. You can find out more about this in the information sheet on „Hate and Violence on the Internet“.

If payment cards or identity documents have been stolen, it is essential to block the cards quickly. In such cases, please contact the following telephone number immediately: Emergency hotline for blocking cards: +49 116 116. You can, of course, still report the theft online.

Online criminal complaint in four steps

Go to the website of the Land where the crime was committed. You can find the links at the end of this article. Click on the relevant link and select the “filing a criminal complaint” section. Good to know: If you are unsure whether the incident you want to report is a crime, you can go onto the websites of the online police stations to submit information instead of filing a criminal complaint.

Fill out the online form. When doing so, you will be asked questions such as: What happened? How, where and when did it happen? Who was harmed? You will be asked about the circumstances of the crime, and witnesses, as well as about the amount of damage and possible motives of the offender. Furthermore, if you file a criminal complaint at an online police station, your personal data will also be recorded, such as your name and address, e-mail address, date and place of birth.

After submitting the criminal complaint, you will receive a confirmation from the police along with a file number. We recommend that you print this out for your records. Sometimes a copy of the criminal complaint will also be sent automatically to your e-mail address.

The online criminal complaint will be reviewed by the police and forwarded to the relevant police department, where it will then be processed.
